WINNER OF THE JUDGES AWARD @ TVE GLOBAL SUSTAINABILITY AWARDS 2019

So we all know there is a pressing issue with the way we consume plastic and how it is devastating our oceans, yet for some reason there doesn’t seem to be enough discussion or action taking place regarding one massive offender in particular, plastic period products.

Plastic pollution can now be found on every beach in the world. Period products are the 5th most common item found on Europe’s beaches, more widespread than single-use coffee cups, cutlery or straws.

One pack of period pads contains the same amount of plastic as five carrier bags, and a staggering 4.3 billion disposable menstrual products are used in the UK every year.

86% of the British public are worried about the impact of plastic pollution but aren’t currently given adequate choice or education when it comes to what they are putting in their bodies every month.

 

Feeling compelled to help spread awareness and get people talking about such a pressing issue we teamed up with City to Sea to produce a dramatic and stylish short film titled ‘Turning Tides’. Punchy visuals of coastlines from around the world, international talented sportswomen doing what they love and a soundscape entirely composed from found plastic, the film highlights our deep and vital connection with the ocean while also aiming to expose the devastation that is being caused below the surface. As we start to wake up to the realities of our actions, ‘Turning Tides’ calls  on us all to seek simple ways to protect what we love.

This colourful promo for Australian artist Tkay Maidza that was created completely in lockdown. During the shoot, the crew and client spanned several different time zones, with the artist in Adelaide, Director/Producer in the UK, the label in NY and management in LA.

The team only had a small window to work with each day where everyone was awake during the preproduction process. On set a live feed from the camera meant the crew could frame and review shots easily while several cameras in the studio allowed them to see what was happening 'big brother' style outside of frame. The crew could dial in to hear comments and a speaker near the artist allowed the director Joss to talk to Tkay directly for direction throughout takes.

Working closely with Wieden+Kennedy, Mill+ Directors Jorge Montiel and William McGregor helped bring to life this intriguing and funny third trailer for Warner Brothers x Niantic’s ‘Harry Potter: Wizards Unite’ game, which takes place in the world of ‘Harry Potter’ and ‘Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them’.

The crux of this trailer for the Wizards Unite Game lies in the character of the Niffler, who was entirely recreated using CG and animated at The Mill. A great example of some of The Mill’s capabilities, including live action direction, animation direction and animation, this trailer is part of the incredible saga that continues to keep the Wizarding World alive.

Mysteriously, elements of the Wizarding World seem to be leaking into the muggle universe at an alarming rate – the trailers for the game encourage viewers to ‘enlist’ to help save the world.

In the film, we are first greeted by visuals expressing that what we are about to see is of extreme importance to the Wizarding World. Then a video of two young girls shows up, seemingly shot by a parent at an arcade, where they are excitedly laughing and pointing to something that seems just out of sight – until it isn’t anymore. We get to see the Niffler, a creature from the wizarding world, as it hiccups out golden tokens inside an arcade machine.

'Las Mujeres de Fuego' is an exploration of archetypes of womanhood through history (oh, and beautiful nails)

“In the beginning, there was the goddess…”

So starts Las Mujeres de Fuego, a new campaign film from Fuego Nails. Inspired by the ways mythology and history have been manipulated to cast shame upon powerful women, Las Mujeres de Fuego, or Women of Fire, tells the story of five female archetypes and explores the taboos associated with them ranging from witchcraft to sexuality.

The campaign comes from London-based salon Fuego Nails and launches its Bad Bitch press-on nail collection. Founded by Natasha Blake, at the centre of Fuego Nails is an ethos of sisterhood and female empowerment. A practising bruja, Blake brings her intuitive energy into her job, working collaboratively with her clients to materialise their visions into tangible realities and create deeply symbolic nail art. With Las Mujeres de Fuego, Blake wanted to portray the recurring themes she was seeing in the way her clients were expressing themselves. “I wanted to reflect this within my work so that anyone could feel their personality expressed through the nails they choose to wear,” Blake says. “The idea is that there's a design in this collection for everyone.”

Each of the women in Las Mujeres de Fuego, at the same time, epitomise and usurp stereotyped visions of womanhood. By heightening and poking fun at the traits that have been historically used to hold women down, they turn this narrative on its head. “All the characters are bad bitches in their own way and there's one of them in all of us,” says Blake.

The carefully shot, monochromatic film is set in the singer's hometown of Walsall and captures various groups of men in ordinary situations. Each scene is shot in a portrait style allowing the viewer to really connect to the characters represented and the profound lyrics of Smith's song. 

The nostalgic piece ultimately pays homage to the community of Walsall and the people that make up that community. Various other Midland heroes including Jaykae, Mike Skinner, Preditah and Benjamin Zephaniah appear in the film alongside a beautifully choreographed contortionist.
